We all know that children thrive when they have a sense of belonging. Children need strong, positive connections with friends who support and understand them, and people they can turn to for help. It matters to children. It matters to you. It matters to us!
KidsMatter Primary is an Australia initiative for primary schools that provides a framework, resources and support to identify and implement strategies to improve the mental health and well being of students.
What is mental health
Mental health is how we think or feel about ourselves and what is going on around us and how we cope with the ups and down of life. Mental health is not mental illness or "problems" or "difficulties". Mental health is part of our overall sense of wellbeing and includes positive aspects that create a fulfilling and meaningful life (e.g confidence, optimism, persistence).
KidsMatter began as a pilot program in 100 schools across Australia in 2007 – 2008. The evaluation of the pilot showed improvements in student wellbeing, behaviour and learning outcomes. KidsMatter Primary will give our school access to the latest thinking and research on mental health and wellbeing including:
More strategies to help us build a positive school community.
Social and emotional learning.
Resources for use in and beyond the classroom.
Practical ideas for working with families.
Specific guidance to help children with mental health difficulties.
KidsMatter Primary is a great example of a partnership between education and health. The partners are the Principals Australia Institute, beyond blue and the Australian Psychological Society. The KidsMatter whole-school approach will assist our school to be the best possible place to nurture and support the wellbeing and academic achievement of all students.
